How Big Balls of Space Rock Explain Your Un-heavenly Personality
Surprise, surprise, the sun is not the only big floating spherical-like mass used in astrology. The sun sign is the most commonly known and used sign and is what most people consider their star sign (the sign that is correlated with birth month). And, well, this is to be expected since the sun sign usually holds the most salient behaviors and traits desired of a person. The sun represents our conscious mind in astrology, representing our will to live and our creativity. The sun represents parts of our identity, our ego, and what we strive to be. It doesn’t represent who we are in the present but what we strive to be in our values. When following the sun we become the brightest and joyful to be around, it is also important to note that the sun also represents reason as opposed to instinct. The sun reflects how we use the here and now to affect our future, using rational thinking rather than the other luminary, the moon. The moon infuses our past into our present lives through feeling and emotion-based thinking. This can explain why you never “resonated” with your sun sign. Contrary to popular belief, the sun doesn’t represent who you are as in traits you’re born with, however, it reflects the traits that bring the best out of a person. Now, the moon on the other hand represents our unconsciousness, our deepest personal needs, and our basic habits and reactions.
Where the sun sign affects your actions, moon signs affects your automatic reactions. The moon reflects how we instinctively react and respond to our problems. It is responsive, receptive, and reflective and is associated with both our inner child and inner protector. The moon shows how we protect ourselves as we are both the guardian and its child, showing how we make ourselves feel secure and comfortable.
To sum it up, while the sun is rational the moon is irrational.
The moon drives habitual practices and prejudices, though the sun may restrict them, the moon rules our unpredictable emotions and reactions. Think of it as two modes of thinking, when you are misunderstood it is your moon’s nature that has been messily expressed through your sun. When you know what you’re supposed to do in terms of a task but don’t know how you’re supposed to do it, it is your sun and moon refusing to react the same. The position of the moon shows our instinctual response to our environment. The moon shows which areas of life we feel most comfortable in.
To link the sun and the moon to an analogy in real life psychology in a less witch-y manner that is more understandable, the moon and the sun are parallel to the Dual Processing Theory that influenced our thinking and decision making. Research on this subject frequently refers to two distinct types of thinking and decision making: Rational and intuitive thinking and decision making. Though this theory doesn’t revolve around our birthplace and time, it does show similarities to the sun and moon. Like the sun, it is believed that rational thinkers have the time and give the effort needed to make correct decisions while intuitive thinkers tend to make impulsive and emotion-driven decisions and therefore are unlikely to make correct decisions like the moon. System 1 and 2 thinking are both frameworks to better understand our decision-making processes and the sun and the moon can be referenced in the same way. As is in psychology, both systems of thinking and decision making are is generally present in all humans and, of course, the same can be said about the sun and moon. The sun and moon attempt to describe in what ways are our intuitive and rational thinking lean towards to in behaviors, for example, Capricorns tend to be analytical whereas Pisceans tend to be ruminative. Additionally, the way we’re are raised and conditioned, our cultures, and our values determine whether our moon (intuitive) or sun (rational) is more salient over the other. Here’s to show that astrology has a correlation with common social science theories.
