Visual Stream of Consciousness

As her BUDDY! debut, guest writer and artist Gigi Shum (11) explores the โ€œStream of Consciousnessโ€ narrative technique in her avant-garde piece Visual Stream of Consciousness. She particularly endeavors to capture the careful balance between authenticity and lack of focus that characterizes this type of narration. While the use of this technique is able to portray every facet of a characterโ€™s psyche, the thoughts explored are often arbitrary and fit loosely with the central idea (just as a human mind works). This spirit is captured expertly in the collage of 9 near-identical paintings, each color combination highlighting a different quality of the original line-work.

Gigi is a guest writer and artist for BUDDYโ€™s fifth issue. A junior and new IB student, Gigi laments her missing out on Art HL despite being a skillful artist.
