Enter the City

Nicole Sun (G11)

Nicole was stuck in a traffic jam on her way to class one morning when she wrote this poem. She played with the poem’s layout to enhance the tone and mood of it, while also attempting to further contrast the portrayal of nature and man-made structures’ characterizations.

It’s a foggy day

a sheer lace of water droplets

drape over clouds

landing over eyelashes
delicately with grace.

Hints of fresh soil and grass
slither up like sand eels,
thin
mIsChieVoUs
streaks
of
rain,
clogging up noses with
Their crisp and clean petrichor.

Newly grown foliage

float

like delicate green fae
R e a c h o u t
While clinging close to their branches
scared;

By buildings
LOOMING
Like golems
ROUGH, DARK, UNFORGIVING

Rickety trucks,
haggard,
c O u g h
and heaVe
leave behind pungent gas.

Air conditioning boxes
clinging to their walls and balconies
drool
and
sputter
as they c h u r n
melting air
no longer pure.

And the hopes of saplings
turn to d u s t
as they are trampled on
by hovering brick feet.
