Austin Li (ISB G12)

Austin Li (ISB 12) presents us with yet another rant, this time about how lonely he is through the disconnect between upper and under classmen.

Yo, who are you? No, like actually, who are you? I literally do not know you. Now, if you’re anything like my editor, you’re probably wondering, what the f*** is Austin talking about again?

Well, here’s the thing. I’ve been talking with a bunch of seniors and junior kids and I’ve just realised that I simply do not know the underclassmen at all. Like... at all.

Now, to make this a bit more awkward, my editor here is an underclassman (love you Nicole <3), but hear me out. I know that Covid and the whole e-learning BS really took our lives for a spin, but I never would have imagined that this whole... “disconnect” would’ve happened, nor would I have cared about it so much. Back when I was a freshman, I remember actively seeking out the seniors, dragging them along my escapades and forcing them to bear through my crappy jokes and personality. When it came to Forensics, I also remember when I would bust my ass laughing from the crackhead energy of Max Barte or Naina’s double-texting act. Not only did they take the time to talk to me and walk me through the whole acting process, but I also reached out to them and found a new friend in the whole process.

Where is that right now? Like, I’m not blaming any of the underclassmen or upperclassmen for this whole lack of communication, but seriously... can we take it back to 2017? Dear freshmen and sophomores: we don’t bite. For real, I’ve always wanted to connect with y’all, but sometimes I feel like I’m not getting that *energy* or the *gusto* so to speak.

Take some initiative, do things, surprise us. You have the WHOLE world served right in front of you for ¥314,240 a year. ¥1562 a day. ¥260 an hour. ¥4.34 a minute. The least you can do is speak out or even just say hi :(.
